The Top 3 Beauty Trends Taking Over in Nigeria

27.6.23

Beauty trends come and go each season but I will admit that in Nigeria, they are wont to stay much, much longer than just a season. After all, how many seasons do we have now right?

Well, I've been paying attention and 3 top beauty trends have stayed true right from 2020 till now and they don't seem to be going anywhere any time soon.

Top 3 Nigerian Beauty Trends

1. Subtle Makeup Glam

There was a time when bold and strong colours were the other of the day when it came to Nigerian makeup looks but there has been a total 360 turnaround to more subtle glam not just in everyday looks but also in looks for the red carpet and events these days. Don't believe me? Just take a cursory look at the red carpet looks we see these days and you'll begin to understand what I mean.

There is now the prevalence of eyeshadow colour washes and minimal/natural tones, as opposed to intricate colour eyeshadow applications; more red lips taking the focus and no more clashes of eyes and lips; more focus on bronzed/highlighted/glowing skin and less on colour in makeup.

2. Natural Hair

As much as I'm tempted to say this refers to the natural hair that comes out of our head, I can't, lol. While this includes women now embracing their natural curls, kinks, and coils, and using hair oils, hair creams, and other natural hair products to nourish and care for their hair,

It also means, embracing their natural hair - unrelaxed or relaxed. There is more focus on 'healthy' hair in general, and more awareness of how to care for the hair even when wearing a wig or weaves.

There is also a lot of DIY in hair now unlike before when there was a heavy reliance on salons. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying people don't patronise salons again, I'm saying that they've learned how to do the things done in the salons too.

3. Skincare

I like this trend.
It has made me more conscious, aware and knowledgeable about skincare ingredients, techniques, more consistent and generally more in tune with my skin.

As we all know, this began during the pandemic and now, everywhere we turn, there is kBeauty, Essences, Acids, Serums, Toners, Moisturisers, Cleansers etc. Terms like double cleansing have become the norm as well. The target is a healthy, glowing, natural skin and I'm totally here for this particular trend.
