My Most Popular Pins

Yes pins, I made no mistake.
If you have checked my sidebar then you most definitely have seen the link to my Pinterest account.

Every week, Pinterest sends out a mail notifying account owners of their most popular pins for the week, inspirational boards they would like and top pins for the week too.

Well, I just got the mail about my top pins for the week and I would love to share them with you.
Yes, the year has almost ended but still, these are pins I have loved and others have loved with me too.
no week passes by without a notification about another like or re-pin of this image. I guess I can understand why though.

‘Ankara Rebel’ AT LOST IN LAGOS

A beauty to behold, when the glory of a woman is beautifully adorned for all to see
I was at the last edition of the Lost in Lagos shopping event at Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos. I didn’t get to take pictures of the different stands as I was without my camera but I saw a lot of beautiful items for sale there. From printed clothes and hand made art items to antique jewellery and even home accessories.

Product Review: 'Motives by Loren Ridinger'

I am definitely threading on delicate ground with this review and so I have decided to make it as brief as possible so I don't end up in a coma before the day is out.
Well, that will only happen if I write the wrong things though but trust me, I will be as truthful as humanly possible.

Friendship Haul

I really should be very ashamed of myself for not showing you guys the very awesome haul (including Motives by Loren Ridinger products) that I got in late November.

Abi of Abizart has wanted to send me some Motives products to review for a while but there was no one. So when a friend was going to the UK on a 2-week visit (he got the fabulous chocolate which you can read more about here), I sent him her number and voila, I got a makeup haul.
From the back - Van Der Burgh Chocolate, Benefit Hello Flawless Brightening foundation, MAC eyeshadow pigments, New Eve cosmetics (a new brand Abi wants me to check out) and Motives compact powder, blush and eyeshadow.
Everything is in draft and I will be posting the reviews of these before the Konga haul reviews. Haul

All readers of my blog including my FB fans and Twitter followers, know that not too long ago, I had an issue with an online shopping site where I didn’t get my money back until I published a post about it.

Well, I decided to venture out again on this time around, it was payment upon delivery and not before.

My order arrived right on time and here is everything I ordered.
clockwise from left - Revlon Colorstay 12 hour eyeshadow, Urban Decay cream eyeshadow, MAC Veluxe Pearl eyeshadow, Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick, Maybelline Eyestudio Silky Glam eyeshadow
from the office supply section and I am sure you know what I got this for right?
Reviews coming right up.

Product Review: Zaron 'Read My Lips' Lip gloss

“There is nothing I like better than having a woman with full, inviting lips beckon at me every night.”

Those were my exact thoughts when I first saw the new Zaron Read My Lips l/g. I will not be lying or exaggerating when I say that it is the best nude lip gloss I have ever seen.

It is suitable for any skin shade and is very adaptable as it can be used alone or over a lip stick.

Product Review: L'Oreal HIP Foundations & RR Shea Luxury Oil

Stagnation in any life process is not a key to success in overcoming defeat in that area
Thus, I recently decided to change my foundation routine and upgrade my 'hairdrobe' (I got that from African Naturalistasespecially as I am falling more in love with my natural hair.

Makeover 1923: Stella (with Zaron & Wet n' Wild)

I was in the office over night!
In the advertising industry this is not unheard of and is sometimes a rather frequent occurrence.

That aside, my sister was going out that morning and had earlier requested that I do her makeup. I had no choice but to get out my kit as soon as I stepped into the house at 6am on saturday morning.

The expected 'Van Der Burgh Chocolaad' taste

I am on a diet! (I just wanted to get that out of the way)

But a friend of mine got this for me when he travelled and I have been fawning over it. Someone has the job of making sure I don't eat this but it has such a cute packaging I just had to show you all.
it is a Dutch brand of dark chocolate

How I Almost Got Lost in Lagos Island

Hello everyone,

So I have been very off and on and all about everywhere. Please be sure to holla at me via my facebook page or twitter handle next time I am MIA.

Now, on an unrelated topic, I took a trip to Lagos Island some time back. For those of us who can't afford to shop in boutiques, departmental stores and buy handmade collections, we go to Lagos Island market for good quality but affordable items. I wanted a handbag without having to cough out more than was reasonable so off i went to Lagos Island after getting my last set of braids done.
along the road

Breast Cancer awareness month is October but it is not surprising to see Breast Cancer charity events still hold in November.

Last saturday, a dear friend of mine Nory MUA and I worked at the FASHION FANTASIA BENEFIT FASHION SHOW & FUND RAISER EVENT for Breast and cervical Cancer awareness. It was a well organised event I must say and having being told the look to create, it was relatively easy for us to do our thing.
one of them was missing

Wedding 1923: Chichi Okiche

Makeup artists are usually requested to arrive early for a bridal party and that is exactly what I did on the day of Chychy's wedding. Well, she was surprised (some makeup artists are notorious for being late).

I had to wait quite a while before starting the makeup and then THE POWER WENT OUT.

1923 Photoshoot: Chychy's Wedding Trial

This is the first time I will be posting pictures from a wedding makeup trial. Most times, I either forget to take pictures, take horrible pictures, do the trial in the middle of the night (Tricia of the Mint Green and Gold Wedding post) or just simply do no trial (Nicky, the last 1923 bride. Check out the post of her look here)

This time, I not only have pictures of the trial makeup but a full photoshoot of the bride's (Chychy's) requested look for her wedding. She deserved it and Sarah and I were only too happy to make sure she looked beautiful on her special day.

Celebrating 'Chychy Okiche'

I know that some of you will be wondering who Chychy Okiche is.
Well, she is a dear friend who models for my shoots. For those of who are familiar with my work you must have seen a lot of her.
One of Chychy's facebook pictures
So she is getting married. I am really happy and excited for her (we did a trial/pre-wedding shoot for her last month and some of the pictures were shared on facebook). I am on my knees praying that her dear, darling husband will still let her model for me *sigh on that*

Bimpe Onakoya in Vanity Fair UK

You all know how really excited I get when a Nigerian makeup artist pushes the boundaries, is first in what they do and is recognised internationally.

Well, another has done it and it is our very own Bimpe Onakoya, celebrity makeup artist and one of Nigeria's finest (prior to becoming a makeup artist, I was familiar with her work). She was recently celebrated by Black Up at the opening of their International store in Ikeja Mall, Lagos.

(1923|Guest|Post) Afraid of the Bold and the Bright?

Lipstick (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
I thought really hard about this guest post, some would say too long and too hard.  I kept having conversations in my head, that this topic was much discussed, old and played out.  Then lo and behold there in a Makeup Artist Forum someone expressed their fear of wearing bright lipsticks!  I had an Eureka moment right then and there. Needless to say, it is not so irrelevant afterall.

Loving Filters

I have been away for so long and I know I rarely ever say anything about myself but I have been sick. A lot of you have been wondering if there is anything wrong with me and why I never say anything outside of makeup but that is going to change.

On a blogger forum I am part of I discovered Pixlr. One of the things it can help you do is to give your pictures filters and some other things (which Instagram is famous for). I don't have Instagram but have always loved the vintage feel of its pictures and so I was excited to try this out.
Chychy in the rain.
I don't know if any of you remember this shoot Am I Vixen? This picture is from there.
The effect makes her look like she is posing behind a window with rain falling.

Product Review: Blush Beauty - Liquid Foundation, Loose Powder & Lipsticks

It is way past the Nigerian Independence Day and being my Independence Day haul, this post is really late but it had to go on the queue along with my other product reviews.

Well, it is finally here though so I say let's go for it.

On Independence Day here in Nigeria - October 1; I received a 'Thank You' package from Blush Beauty and this is what was contained in the package
Liquid foundation, Loose Powder and 2 lipsticks

Product Review: INGLOT 2 Eyeshadow Freedom Square & Sleeks Lipgloss

For the first time ever, a friend of mine got me makeup as a gift. Considering that it is a male friend I must say that this endeared me more to him than ever and once again I say 'Thank you' to him.

Not only did he just buy me makeup, he got me Inglot, my very first Inglot makeup which made it all the more exciting.

Product Review: Santee Gold & Silver Pencils

I got these just as I was about to leave the fair. The lashes were a gift from Yhewande of Beyond Faces, the gold and silver pencils beckoned to me from her stand as I looked for what to buy.
the lashes are still as they appear in the pic as I am yet to get the courage to poke my own eyes with falsies and glue, lol.

Product Review: Wet n' Wild Comfort Zone Eyeshadow Palette

Even I must be hoarse after including my voice to that of those who have been giving rave reviews about all the Wet n' Wild palettes. However, I just must add my voice to theirs because these palettes are just gorgeous.
Wet n' Wild 8 colour palette in Comfort Zone. I was drawn to the greens and duo-tones in this palette and I must say that this is a very versatile palette which can be used to create a variety of looks from a neutral to smokey.

Product Review: Fashion Fair Cashmere Brown Lipstick

This post and this post are the closest I have ever come to using a bronze or chocolate colour on my lips. Well, I got another Fashion Fair goodie bag from Funke at the Fair and in it was this bronze-chocolate lipstick.

Product Review: NYX Nude & Pink Soft Matte Lip Cream

Ever since my mum took my Rocher nude l/s in exchange for an Estee Lauder light pink l/s, I have been on the prowl for the perfect nude lip colour. I was looking forward to finding the perfect nude at the fair and I made sure everyone who was going to have a stand there knew, lol.

Well, I got a nude lip colour and a light, baby pink lip colour (a colour I have just recently been craving) at the Gifty's Daughter stand.

You Know You Are Nigerian When ......

I stole this post off Jackie's blog. It is really funny and true in a way and I really wanted to share it with you all. You can find Jackie's original post here and I haven't tampered with it at all.

Believe me when I say this is really funny and if we Nigerians are true to ourselves, we will admit that for we here and even in Diaspora it is very true.

You know you are Nigerian:
  1. If your name is so long, or so hard to pronounce, that you either have some “Americanized” nickname, or you use your middle name (which is English).
  2. If, you know what your name means.
  3. If you know of anyone (including yourself) that has any of the following names: Ola, Sade, Bola, Tunji, Ngozi, Uche, Folake, Ifeoma, Tolu, Tunde, Obi, Chioma, Chituru, Chinyere, Adaobi, Nkemi, Nneka, Bunmi or Fatima
  4. If, names like Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Patience, Peace, Blessing, God’s Will or Mercy sound pretty normal to you.
  5. If, rice and stew just isn’t the same without plantain (dodo)

Product Review: BarryM Gold Eyeshadow Pencil

This brand launched in Nigeria at the fair courtesy of Monade Skincare. Having heard about it from foreign sites and reviews, I was looking forward to it. I was only able to get an eyeshadow pencil as that is what my budget allowed but I hope to be able to review more BarryM products as time goes by.

1923 Thought For the Day

A lot of the time I do tend to wonder what it is I have been placed in this world to do. What exactly is my destiny and have I been fulfilling it?

Especially recently, this question has plagued me. Remember my I WISH post?

I am doing so much and yet I am doing nothing. Is it just me who thinks that or is it the way the world perceives of the things I do or is that how things actually are? See, I have more questions than answers.

It is the middle of the night and my mind is wide awake, thinking, searching, looking for clues that I am on the right path and praying that a bright light shines from a direction to show that I am indeed on the right path.

No one can really give me an answer to that question right? I might as well get used to it. Only GOD can give me an answer; in His 'still small voice'. But I have to be calm and listen or else I won't hear what He is saying. I have to move away from the noise of the world and move closer to His voice.

Barbara be still and listen! Only then will you hear and only after hearing will you know for sure. So just be still.

1923 Asks: Joy Adenuga

For some of you, the name Joy Adenuga was unknown to you until she became the First Nigerian Makeup Artist to have her work featured in Vogue Italia (Photo Vogue).

I had the wonderful opportunity to be the first to ask her how such an achievement feels; and also to tell us a little about the shoot.
Here is my blog interview with Joy

Product Review: Arike Liquid Pen Liner & Eye Shadow

Believe it or not this was my first pen liquid liner. I absolutely love my gel and cream liners and usually apply wand liquid liners with an angled liner brush. This was a sure first and I was sincerely hoping that it wouldn't disappoint me.

Zaron Lagos Island Store Independence Launch

On the 1st of October, one of my fav Nigerian makeup brands - Zaron Makeup & Hair opened a new store in Lagos Island. Of course yours truly was there.
Located in the heart of Balogun market (for Lagosians), close to Kuddy Cosmetics and above the Sleek store; this new Zaron store is hard to miss.

Product Review: Prestige Liquid Ink Eyeliner

This was the very first product I purchased at the fair and I got this on a whim. As you all know I am not an overtly colourful person when it comes to makeup so I still wonder what made me turn to a bright, shimmery, turquoise liquid liner.

Lagos Makeup Fair Haul

This has been a really long time coming but if you are a fan of my facebook page you must have seen a picture of my haul. Well, this is it.
Individual reviews coming soon.

Gifty's Daughter Professional Brush Set Ad campaign

If you are a makeup artist in Nigeria you definitely must have heard of Gifty's Daughter. Owned by Funke Tonye Preghafi who has been in the makeup and beauty industry for over 10 years, Gifty's Daughter (though based in Port Harcourt) has become a destination point for professional makeup artists in Nigeria to find everything they need.

Well, this post is to give you a sneak peek into the upcoming advertising campaign for Gifty's Daughter professional makeup brush set.

Get The Look!

All over the world, people tune into youtube everyday to look at replica makeup looks of various Hollywood stars and divas all over the world. All over the world with the exception of Nigeria that is.

Well, that has come to an end with the Get The Look column on

Twitter Chat Transcript - #BarbaraChats with @Blushnigeria

Last week saturday - 22nd Sep. 2012, the first ever Nigerian Makeup/Beauty Industry Live Twitter Chat was held. Bola Fadina - owner of Blush Beauty ; a Lagos based brand focused on makeup and beauty was my guest.

We had a lot of participants and I must confess that I was overwhelmed by the participation. The 30 minutes earlier scheduled for the chat was over shot and the chat lasted for over an hour. I was in the store for the chat and took some pictures prior to the chat.
Me trying to make the chat a very formal affair, lol - my note, empty glass of water, phones and biro (i used the camera to take this picture)

TWITTER CHAT - #BarbaraChats with @Blushnigeria

I am super excited. I will be hosting my first Live Twitter chat tomorrow with Bola Fadina of Blush Beauty (check out her interview)
If you are on twitter at that time, please join in.

I will be doing live product reviews from the Blush store and Bola will be on hand to answer all and any questions about the brand.

See (or more like read you right? lol) you there

p.s. If you are unable to make the chat, don't worry because the transcript will be posted on my blog and chat stream pics will be posted to the Barbara & 1923 FB page

My Hair | Before the Braids

So my hair is in braids now. A relief I must say.
I am going to have them in braids until I can get suitable products for my natural hair (the ones I have caused me loads of acne on my arms, back and shoulders so I am not quite pleased about it)

Anyway, before I got the hair twisted into braids, here are some of the different styles I had it in (if you can call them styles that is)
the next time you see my natural curly hair, it will be devoid of its shiny ends.

The First Lagos Makeup Fair

It was the first Lagos makeup fair on the 8th of September and yours truly was there (why won't I be there?). Needless to say, it was a successful event.
My poor photography skills have once again being tested and I think i failed this one but I would still love to share the pictures I took with you (I am quite sure you will be able to differentiate the ones I took and the ones I have swapped from others, lol)

1923 Face of the Day: Plum Plum

I mentioned in my previous wedding post that I finally got to wear makeup to a gig. I loved it and I must say that I got quite a lot of respect from the Client and references were made to the way my makeup looked especially when I was doing the sister-of-the-bride's makeup.
I used that little plum sample lipgloss I got from Zaron a while ago

Nigerian Makeup Artist in Vogue

I am back with another PhotoVogue feature. Yes, by a Nigerian makeup artist and this time there are 2 pictures (can you beat that?) I daresay, Nigerian makeup artists are on a roll.

This time, the MUA is Lola Maja Okojevoh of Sacred Artistry.

How Have You Fared?

2012 has almost come to an end. We have 3 months to go till the end of the year. If you are like me, then you must have been doing some introspection and asking yourself if you have fared well this year.
So tell me if your journey has been straight on according to plan or did you turn at a curve? Will I need to remind you of your 2012 promise to yourself in December?
